GOSS COLLECTORS’ CLUB AUCTION

OCTOBER 2017

Welcome to the Goss Collectors' Club monthly auction of Goss and other makes of heraldic (or crested) china.

Below are listed the items available in this month's auction. For each lot, descriptions both of the piece and of the arms or decoration it bears (if any) are given, followed by its reserve price. Lots listed in normal (upright) typeface were produced by the Goss factory, though this is not stated explicitly in the individual descriptions unless the item is a late "Goss England" piece. Items produced by other factories are listed in italic type, and in these cases the description begins with the factory name, which is underlined.

Please note that the auctions are only open to members of the Goss Collectors' Club, who are welcome to submit bids for or requests for information about specific pieces in it by email to the club auction secretary. Members and non-members may also purchase unsold items from earlier auctions at the reserve price. Regularly updated lists of the currently available items can be found here.

Non-members may send in postal bids for pieces in these auctions provided their membership application and the appropriate subscription is sent at the same time. Please see the club's home page or contact its website manager for details.

For the full terms and conditions of bidding please see the auction rules.

Enquiries regarding the Goss Collectors' Club may be submitted to its website manager.

Good morning, as I sit here in my ‘office’ in mid August families are walking past loaded up with the paraphernalia for a day on the beach but my thoughts are with the December auction.  As you know I seek to offer some special pieces at Christmas and whilst there is always a degree of panic as to what I can list it seems that, usually, things come right in the end.  I am more than usually apprehensive this year as I have precious little ‘stock’ waiting to be listed and what I do have is in the main lacking in that special something.  So if you think you might be able to help please get in touch very swiftly as the November auction nears completion.

On the subject of something special the last item in the listing is a Lion of Flanders plate which was for very many years desperately rare but following the importation of several from the region they are by no means as rare as they were, that doesn’t mean they are frequently seen, far from it.   This by the convoluted logic of my thinking brings me to the subject of value.  The plate is reserved at what I believe to be a fair if somewhat discounted reserve.  The value of any piece of Goss or Crested China is, I believe, that which someone is prepared to pay.  It is most certainly not what a dealer asks for it, or indeed the reserve I or the vendor may set.  In this regard the Lion of Flanders is reserved at £125.00 this compares extremely favourably with one which is listed for sale by a dealer at £650.00!  Whilst I can’t offer such bargains as a matter of routine and indeed some of the reserves may in fact seem to be expensive it does illustrate that your auction is well worth the time and trouble of a read through.

Bids by midday on 21st October please
