Tongue in cheek, October could be described as “a month of Autumnal fruitfulness”, which is our justification for chosing this Goss England Royal Buff Two Handled Loving Cup with its Cider theme as our Pot of the Month. Standing 4¼” /11cm high and 3½”/9cm in diameter, we don’t think you’d get very much Cider in it, but for all that, it’s still a very decorative item. With two hand painted rosy apples on the front and the slogan “Yaas, tis thirsty work ave a drop a Zomerzet Zider” it’s fun too. You can see that the Goss mark on the base is a late one, as it is “W.H.Goss England” and “Royal Buff”, the name given to this particular style of pottery as it’s definitely a good solid clay pot, and not the usual porcelain for which Goss is best known. Goss purists might argue that it isn’t really Goss, being manufactured at the very end of the pottery’s life sometime in the late 1930’s, but we still like it.
