May’s pot of the month is this pretty Bagware Saucer, bearing a hand painted decoration of sprigs of Primroses. The reverse shows the Goss back stamp, along with the design’s registration number. You can find various items of Goss decorated with Primroses, which probably came about as a result of “Primrose Day”. This marked the anniversary of the death of Queen Victoria’s favourite Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, 1st Earl of Beaconsfield, on 19 April 1881. Bagware was produced between 1881 and 1925, so this is obviousy an early piece.
Yes, we know April has now been and gone, but as Primroses flower from December to May, and we wanted something which looked Springlike and cheerful, we’re posting this anyway!
