We thought given that it is New Year, this one would be appropriate. A Goss 3¾”/9.5cm high – 2¼”/ 6cm diameter beaker, decorated with an unusual decoration “The Church of England Temperance Society”. The Society was founded in 1862, ostensibly to persuade the poor not to drink to excess. By 1875 Queen Victoria had become its patron, and local branches had been established in all of the Church’s Dioceses. Temperance Movements still exist today, indicating that perhaps not very much has changed regarding our attitude to drink!
