November’s Pot of the Month is not made by Goss this time, but by Leadbeater Art China of Longton (operating as Hewitt & Leadbeater from 1907 – 1919 then as Hewitt Brothers until 1925). It is a model of Crich Stand in Derbyshire. This model is a rare one, measuring 5¾”/15cm from base to tip, and is beautifully detailed. The real Memorial Tower was erected in 1923 to commemorate the 11,409 members of the Sherwood Foresters (aka “the Woofers” or more correctly, the Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment) who died in the First World War. It is 19 metres (62 ft) high, has 59 steps to the top, and when you get there, amazing views right across Derbyshire all the way to Lincoln Cathedral. There is an annual pilgrimage to the tower every July to commemorate the beginning of the Battle of the Somme in 1916, and a remembrance service held there on November 11thevery year.
