Given that April is usually the time when all of the bulbs are either coming up or already out, we thought this little bulbous jug (2”/51mm high) bearing the image of a Saffron Walden Crocus would be perfect for April’s Pot of the Month. An uncommon decoration, this jug also has the inscription: A Present From “Saffron Walden”. Renowned for its Crocus growing, the first mention of Saffron being grown in Saffron Walden was during the reign of Edward III (1327 – 1377). After its peak in the1500s the growing of Saffron around Saffron Walden gradually declined, probably because of the huge amount of labour required to harvest it, and by the 1700’s commercial Saffron was no longer grown there. Everything you wanted to know and everything you didn’t, just from one little pot!
