September being the traditional month for harvests, our pot of the month is this Taper Tea cup and Saucer. Decorated in gold with butterflies, moths and grasses, we thought they might be flying around near the crops or the grasses on the edges of the fields!
This early decoration is matched by the equally early red/puce coloured backstamp (yes, we know, it probably looks black here but it honestly isn’t) and bears the design registration number 32887. We think this indicates that the design was registered sometime between January 1885/86. As there are only four five-digit registration numbers recorded, it is likely that this one fits in somewhere between those. It should be noted that an early registration doesn’t necessarily mean the item was manufactured during that particular year. If you look carefully, you can also see an impressed mark.
