October’s Pot of the Month is this vase with everted rim. Standing 3”/7.5cm high it is decorated with an image of King Arthur, and an inscription on the base which says: “From King Arthur’s Round Table at Winchester Castle”. Besides the usual black W.H Goss back-stamp, this particular piece also has an impressed W.H Goss mark on the base. A nice decoration, and one you don’t see that often.
The Round Table can still be seen today, hanging on the wall in the Great Hall at Winchester Castle. The original table was constructed in the 13th century and painted in its present form for King Henry VIII. The first mention of the Round Table is Robert Wace’s Roman de Brut (1155), which says that Arthur seated his knights at a round table so that all should be equal.
